Maintaining Your Concrete Driveway during Spring

04 Mar 2020

Spring has sprung once again, making it the perfect time to look at the maintenance of your concrete driveway.

Here at Cobblecrete, we are the leading provider of driveways in Wolverhampton, and for our latest post, we are going to share the four essential steps to keeping the front of your home looking spectacular.

Four Steps to Spectacular Concrete Driveways

The chances are your driveway took some abuse from winter’s temperature swings, and by not identifying small issues they can become larger, expensive problems over time.

1. Clean Your Driveway – Cleaning your driveway will give you a good indication of its condition following the winter. Sweep away any leftover debris, such as leaves and branches so you can get a closer look at its surface.

Now you will need to check the surface for any growth, such as green algae, mold, and mildew. This can make the surface slippery and dangerous to talk plus black algae will make your driveway look dirty and ruin its appearance. Moss damages the surface of the concrete and can lead to cracking and crumbling.

2. Inspect the Surface – Now you have a clear view of the driveway’s surface there are some important tasks to complete to maintain its health.

Firstly, take a look at the surface after rainfall and check for any areas where water is pooling as these areas will be prone to water damage. Leveling them out will ensure it drains properly and prevents cracking and crumbling at a later date.
Looking for any cracks in the driveway and any areas of crumbling concrete or weed encroachment, as these issues cause severe damage if you do not address them immediately.

3. Repair – Now you have identified problems, you will need them repairing. Our team of specialists has been repairing driveways in Wolverhampton since 1992, so don’t hesitate to give us a call.

To repair cracks, we would recommend waiting for a cool, dry day then we will clean the area and remove any loose pieces of concrete. You can pull up any weeds that have popped up in cracks or along the border of your driveway.
For hairline cracks, we will apply concrete paint over the crack and for larger cracks, we will apply a crack sealer such as vinyl concrete patch, grout or epoxy concrete patch. We would also recommend that you leave the driveway to dry for at least 24 hours before the chance of rain to let the sealer set.

4. Reseal – Now your driveway has been repaired it is time to protect it from future damage. Cobblecrete would recommend re-sealing your concrete every five years, depending on where you are based.

By taking care of your driveway, you will have a solid asset to your home for many years to come!
