Why a Concrete Driveway is a Great Investment This November

11 Nov 2021

Concrete is a great building material, especially for projects close to the ground. The reason for this is simple: while concrete is a heavy material, its compression strength is near unbeatable. This alone makes it the architect’s first choice for foundations and other floor-adjacent construction projects. But that’s not the only reason why you should be considering a concrete driveway this Autumn.

Permeability

The first reason why you should be considering building a concrete driveway this November is because concrete is highly porous. This means that poured concrete, once cured, allows water to pass through small channels that develop as the concrete cures. Once this water reaches the surface below the concrete, it rejoins the groundwater, where it rejoins the water cycle.

Permeability is a very handy quality in construction materials, particularly those that sit on the ground. Water that can pass through concrete doesn’t pool on the surface. If water doesn’t have the chance to pool, flooding becomes almost impossible. Nor does the water pose a danger if the ground freezes.

This attribute is enhanced in concrete print driveways, where the block paving pattern printed on the top surface of the driveway will function as a channel for water to flow down — further lowering the chance of injury during freezing temperatures.

Durability

The next reason why a concrete driveway would be a great investment is because of its durability.

As we mentioned at the start of this article, concrete has an incredibly high compression strength. This means that it can withstand high pressures for long periods of time without compressing — making it the ideal parking place for a car, pick up truck or any heavy vehicle you choose.

Furthermore, thanks to this durability, concrete is virtually maintenance free — it’s able to withstand the rigours of weathering, rot, rust, erosion and fire in the long term. This means that you don’t have to spend your free time outside in the freezing cold, cleaning or fixing your driveway. Instead, you can trust that your imprinted concrete driveway can weather the worst that winter can throw at it without any effort on your part.

Environmentally Friendly

The last reason why you should be considering a patterned concrete driveway in November 2021 is because of the environmental impact of concrete. Unlike asphalt or resin-bound aggregates, which require chemicals that have to be expensively imported or created with a high environmental cost, concrete can be sourced locally – made with locally sourced aggregates and calcium silicate. This makes the overall environmental impact of a construction project using concrete much smaller than a similar project using bound resin or bituminous products.
